Morningstar Awards: Fixed-income nominees

Both nominees have internal credit research capabilities which helps them identify opportunities in corporate bonds that are being mispriced by the market, says manager research analyst Vishal Mansukhani.

Ashley Redmond: I’m Ashley Redmond for Morningstar.ca and I’m here with manager research analyst, Vishal Mansukhani. Vishal, thanks so much for joining me.

Here at Morningstar we are gearing up for the 20th Annual Morningstar Awards being held November 26 at the Fairmont Royal York, right here in Toronto. This year it’s being hosted by Peter Mansbridge. Throughout the evening we honour the best and the brightest in the investment industry and a highlight of the evening is always the Morningstar Awards. Our analysts give away five awards including the Morningstar Fixed Income Manager of the Year.

So Vishal, what are some of the qualities that you look for in a winner?

Vishal Mansukhani: All the nominees are managers that are managing positively-rated funds. That means funds that have been rated Bronze, Silver or Gold by Morningstar analysts. Not only has the manager had to have had a good year, the manager also had to serve investors well in the past and should be reasonably expected to serve investors well in the future.

Redmond: This year was it tough to find nominees in the fixed-income space?

Mansukhani: Yes, in the fixed-income space the differences between the returns of various fixed-income funds is very small. So, it is always very difficult to find winners just based on the numbers. We do have a strong emphasis on the investment process as well.

Redmond: Who are the nominees this year?

Mansukhani: The nominees for this year are: CIBC Canadian Bond managers, the CIBC Fixed Income team and the managers of the PH&N Total Return Bond and PH&N Bond fund, the PH&N Fixed Income team.

Redmond: What makes those nominees stand out?

Mansukhani: Both fixed-income teams have strong resources allocated towards them by their asset management firms. They have very robust credit research teams and they have strong technological and risk management tools that they use, which are both things that give fixed-income managers an edge in this universe. Also, both teams have some very experienced and tenured members.

Redmond: Thank you Vishal.

Mansukhani: Thank you.

Redmond: We will see you on November 26 at the Morningstar Awards.
